Deck-chair

It's a simple deck-chair
Made of canvas
Striped and faded
It's flimsy aluminium legs
Planted in the dirt
On plastic nubs
That show the scuffs
But it's so beautiful there
All alone
As the evening comes
Struck by a sunbeam
In the mellow light
As its cloth face
Rustles in the breeze
What a lucky deck-chair
Overlooking the ocean
At the top of a cliff
A copse as a backdrop
To its bare stage
Nothing in front but
The lip at the end of the world
And the calm waters beyond
Undulating,
If you look close enough,
But otherwise coloured glass
What a moment
They must have shared
The bringer and the chair
To have felt that warmth
And that peace
And to know when
To take the air
